You may be saying to yourself “I want to tell my story but I’m not sure what I’m getting myself into”. This is natural so I want to walk you though what an engagement may look like. Of course, it can be customized to fit your specific requirements too. Let’s get started!
Discovery Stage
To begin the process, we will set up a meeting (in-person or virtual) to discuss the overall engagement you are interesting in pursuing. This will start to build the framework for which we will proceed. I’ll ask you questions about:
- The geotechnical or environmental story you wish to tell. Tell me all about it! I love to hear new stories!
- Who will be in the video?
- What type of content are you looking to produce? See this article to learn more about the types of content that can be produced.
- How long do you want it to be?
- Do you want it to be in landscape (better for Youtube) or portrait mode (better for social media shorts)?
- Can footage be captured in the field/project site?
- Do you have existing content (videos, photos, site plans, etc.) you can share to include in the final product?
- What is your timeline?
- What restrictions could there be?
- Anything else I need to know?
If anything changes along the process, don’t hesitate to let me know and we can modify our working plan.
Planning Stage
The planning stage consists mainly of work I will do in preparation for the filming day(s).
I will create a storyboard for the piece consisting of shots I’d like to get, locations, people involved, etc. I will also generate a list of questions that I will be asking the people in the video, based upon the information gained in the discovery phase. The answers your people give will formulate much of the story of the video.
Once I have plan ready, I will send you the draft for review so you can send me any feedback on it or the list of questions I plan to use. At this time, we’ll start to book filming date(s) so we can move towards the next phase.
Filming Stage
On the day(s) of filming, you will want to book the people involved in the video so that they have limited distractions outside of this project. Also, the filming location(s) should be dedicated for the filming process. This will allow for a streamlined filming day.
These people should be prepared to be on video and depending on the output you would like, they should consider their wardrobe for the day (i.e. is business casual ok, do you want them in field gear, do they need to be wearing a shirt with a corporate logo, etc.).
The goal is for them to be giving natural answers to the questions I ask them on camera. You can prepare them with the questions I will ask but they don’t need to memorize and answer word for word. If they mess up during an answer, I can simply cut that part out – they don’t need to be perfect!
If there is the ability to film on site or around your office (or other relevant location), I will gather B-roll footage to supplement the people interviews.
Editing Stage
Once all the footage is gathered, I will work on editing the project into a draft video following the plan generated in the discovery and planning phase.
Review and Final Product
The draft video will be uploaded to an unlisted Youtube page and share the link with you. At this stage, you can give me any feedback for parts of the video you would like to edit/tweak prior to finalizing the project.
Once we have agreed on the final video, I will provide you with the video file via FTP along with some suggested guidelines for posting it. I will also upload it publicaly to my portfolio to further share it with the world.
And that’s it! Did I miss anything you are curious about? Let me know!
