Environmental and geotechnical stories found on YouTube

A quick search of YouTube using terms such as geotechnical engineering case studies or geotechnical engineering videos results in a bunch of great content showing a variety of ways stories can be told.

I shared a number of them in playlists on my YouTube channel and featured some in a previous article. Here are some gems that I found!

Case Studies & Success Stories

Case studies and success stories are often presented in text formats in this industry – a 2 page PDF for example with a couple of photos. But these videos are great examples of how a visually appealing case study can help bring the story to life and be accessible for those who are not experts in the field.

Courtesy of “The Engineering Hub”. This video describes residential foundation problems in a really nice visual way and clear to understand for industry experts and regular folks alike.

Courtesy of “Practical Engineering”. Another example of a visual way to explain to people outside of the industry how bridge foundations work.

Courtesy of “Primal Space”. This video describes how Venice, Italy was constructed out into the sea, centuries ago. Talk about real historical geotechnical storytelling!

Product, Solution or Service Overviews

These two videos are career related stories. Career advice to young engineers and where one woman’s degree took her in the industry. It is a great way to get your message out to younger people in the industry or even people considering entering it. Mentoring younger staff is really valuable for their growth.

Courtesy of “Engineering Management Institute”. This video provides career advice for young engineers as they get their career started. The tagline: “Get your hands dirty.”

Courtesy of “UArizona Mining & Mineral Resources”. This video follows a geotechnical engineer working at a mine site and what she likes about the work, how every day is different and how her schooling helped prepare her. It’s great the mining company allowed access to film this video too.

Fun Videos

I’m always partial to the fun videos – work is more enjoyable when you have a laugh! Both of these videos lightly jest at the profession, but in a way that is pretty spot on and all of us would agree is based in reality!

Courtesy of “Kestava”. This short video, done by a Civil Engineer, not a geotechnical engineer, plays upon some of the quirks that geotechnical engineers have. It was all done in good fun and civil/geotech’s work side by side on many projects. Yes – tasting soil is a thing…

Courtesy of “USACE Buffalo District”. Another “I’m an engineer, of course I…” from the social media trend in early 2024. Many different districts of USACE did their own videos, all with their own quirks and all really great.

These are but a few of the great videos from this field on YouTube. Have you found any that I would enjoy? I’d love for you to share them with me!

You’re welcome Mia! Sometimes it’s helpful to have someone bring together a sample of content for others to easily find.
